Veterans for Peace Civil Disobedience at White House the day after David Swanson spoke at Random Row.

December 19, 2010

A friend and I drove up to D.C. with David and a Veteran for Peace, John Hughes, the morning after David spoke at Random Row.  The rally was a powerful act of civil disobedience led by veterans and other notable authors/activists. 134 were arrested after having broken through police barricades to lock themselves to the fence surrounding the White House.  Daniel Ellsberg, Chris Hedges and Ray McGovern were among the speakers.  They were also arrested.   The voice of the veterans themselves rang with much authority, the most passionate of which were the voices of the young men who had been in Iraq and Afghanistan.  Their’s are prophetic voices crying for an end to the occupation of Iraq and war in Afghanistan/Pakistan where men, women and children die daily as a result of U.S self-interest.
